It was always going to be a tough game for the Ressies with Trinity topping their own league.
Billinge's expectations were high as usual but it was the visitors who adapted better to the blustery conditions.
Billinge just couldn't get into their stride and Southport took advantage of some indifferent defending going in at the break 2-0 up.
Billinge needed to take stock and came out fighting in the second-half with the midfield of Chris Duffy, Derek Evans and Phil Burrows putting their stamp on the game.
Chances were being created with Rob Ablewhite and Tom Ashall both going very close.
Ant Higgins and Ant Farrell tightened things up and 30 minutes into the second-half The Storks got the breakthrough with Ashall scoring.
Joe Ratcliffe and Jordan Farrell came on to replace Duffy and Burrows who were beginning to tire.
The two youngsters added a zest to the game and Jordan Farrell got the equaliser with five minutes to go.
Extra-time drew a blank which meant penalties.
Ablewhite - unusually - missed the first penalty, then the Trinity striker also missed.
Class pens by Ashall, Ant Farrell, Evo & Geoff Parr took it to 5-5.
Joe Ratcliffe scored then Southport missed.
It was all on Jordan Farrell to score to win the game; he picked his spot and fired home to take Billinge into the next round.
MoM. Rob Ablewhite.
